Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Partners with Kentwood Fire & Police Departments on Hero Day for KidSigns Camp

(Grand Rapids, MI, July 12, 2016) — Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services is partnering with the Kentwood Fire and Police Departments on July 18, from 9 am to noon for its annual KidSigns Camp’s Hero Day. The campers will be educated on fire and public safety, and learn what real-life heroes do. This exciting event will be held at Kentwood Fire Station #2, located at 4151 Embassy SE, Kentwood MI 49546.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services’ KidSigns Coordinator, Renita Creasy states, “We are thrilled to have this fantastic event for our campers. Many Deaf and hard-of-hearing children are not aware of fire and public safety, thus they have a higher risk for harm. Our Hero Day will ensure these risks are minimized for our campers, and we hope to even inspire some to become involved with civil service.”

KidSigns, an educational resources program, is available for Deaf and hard-of-hearing children aged 3 to 12. Bimonthly activities and a summer day camp are provided for the children, and are exposed to fluent language role models, which increases their literacy and language skills. The agency also offers TeenSigns, for those aged 13 to 16, where they focus on improving coping skills and life/social skills, in addition to being introduced to successful Deaf adults fluent in American Sign Language.

This year’s KidSigns camp runs from July 18 to 22, daily from 9 am to noon.
