The Wii & Spaghetti Dinner was a lot of fun!  Approximately 75 people came and enjoyed spaghetti dinner, playing wii, and buying potato bags that Audrey Southwell made. All proceeds from the potato bags go to DHHS and Silent Celebration!  Thank you to our volunteers who helped with the Spaghetti Dinner.

March 2011

DHHS’ annual Euchre Tournament on March 13 brought in 24 players and 14 visitors/volunteers!  Congratulations to Beth Magennis for winning 1st place! We profited $488 dollars.  Thank you for your support.  Come join us again in October!

DHHS hosted a Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) workshop given by Jimmy Beldon of ASLFIRST, LLC from March 18-20.  32 deaf people attended the workshop,  since they’re interested in becoming certified interpreters.  We learned a lot from the process. Good luck to everyone who takes the written and performance test!

February 2011

DHHS’ First Annual Silent Weekend was from February 18-20, 2011. 63 people attended. We had workshops, played games, fun activities, got to know each other better and improved our signing skills! It is for ASL enthusiasts, ITPs, graduates, and interpreters.  Deaf mentors included!Our sponsors included West Michigan Registry Interpreter for the Deaf (WMIRID) and Sorenson VRS.

January 2011

The first of the 2011 Interpreter Series Workshops was held Jan. 15 at Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services. Katie Prins gave an informative and analytical workshop called “Analyzing the Human and Interpreting Ethics in Myself”. Approx. 30 interpreters came, despite the snow and cold!  It will be followed up with another workshop during the year on how to react, think and/or solve ethical dilemmas and potential consequences.

Signing Santa was a success! 35 kids came and enjoyed milk, cookies and candy canes from Santa.

DHHS hosted their 2nd annual gala called “Luau Night” at Holiday Inn – Downtown Grand Rapids on September 18.  75 people were in attendance and they enjoyed Dr. Philip Zazove’s keynote speech, seeing pictures of Kids Kamp, Hawaiian theme dinner, Bill Barkeley’s closing speech, and raffles. People won a free night at Holiday Inn, a digital camera, and gift cards!

July 2010

32 deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing children between ages 3-10 came to our 2nd annual Kids Kamp!  They had a lot of fun doing arts & crafts, learning sign language, and meeting visitors such as the fire department, DeeJay the Clown,  and Sensory Safari.  They also learned about music, enjoyed Carnival Day, and what school is all about!  Thank you to our special visitors who made this happen and to our countless volunteers.  We will see you again in 2011!
