Overview & Fees
D&HHS Interpreter Services coordinates professional American Sign Language interpreting services for courts, hospitals, colleges, state and county government, mental health agencies, performing arts venues, conference facilities, and all types of businesses. We also have an after-hours answering service for medical and police emergencies. The D&HHS Interpreter Services program fills approximately 250 assignments per month.
All interpreters working as independent contractors through D&HHS are either state or nationally certified, in accordance with state law. National certification is obtained through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). State certification is offered by the Michigan Division on Deaf, Deafblind, and Hard of Hearing, which administers the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) tests. Interpreters must pass written and performance tests to obtain either type of certification, and meet continuing education requirements to maintain certification. In addition to valid certification, D&HHS requires interpreters to carry professional liability insurance and get an annual TB test.
D&HHS works to assign the highest certified interpreter to each assignment, while working within guidelines established by the state of Michigan. Additionally, we match interpreters to your client’s specific communication needs. Our staff makes it easy for your organization to comply with state and federal laws guaranteeing equal communication access to your deaf and hard of hearing clients.
We fill more medical assignments than any other type. We serve hospitals in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Holland, Zeeland, and Grand Haven, and receive occasional requests from hospitals in Hastings, Kalamazoo, Big Rapids, and other areas. The number of smaller medical/dental offices we serve continues to grow.
Our customer list includes the county offices of Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Community Mental Health, and Department of Human Services in six different counties. We have served over 40 different courts, as well as legal aid offices and several police/sheriff offices.
Our office is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 616-732-7358. Sign Language interpreters are also available nights and weekends for medical or police emergencies. After business hours, a message will direct you to our answering machine service.
Assignments over two hours in duration generally require two interpreters. Please contact our office for more information.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services requires 24 hours notice (one business day) to cancel an interpreter. You will be charged the full contracted time if you cancel less than 24 hours prior to the appointment.
