All of the presentations are in ASL with no English interpretation. If you have not completed ASL 3 at the college level\, Silent Weekend is not a good fit for you yet. Please consider joining us when you are more comfortable with the language. \nAre there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? \nYou must be over 18 years old to attend. \n I’ve graduated my ITP\, but I’m not yet a certified interpreter. Which ticket do I purchase? \nYou should purchase an “Early Bird Full Weekend” ticket prior to January 27 if you plan to attend Friday-Sunday. “Student or Deaf/Hard of Hearing Full Weekend” tickets are reserved for current students with a college ID or a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person. \nWhat can I bring into the event? \nYou should bring bedding including a sleeping bag or blankets\, a pillow and your toiletries (towel\, soap\, shampoo\, hairdryer) You should also bring a flashlight\, and warm clothes if you plan to go outdoors during free time. Please do not bring valuables as we cannot be held responsible for anything lost or stolen. Please do bring your quarters to feed the piggy bank for each spoken word if you happen to slip up. \n How can I contact the organizer with any questions? \nPlease email Jennifer Kolhoff\, D&HHS Workshop Coordinator\, at workshops@deafhhs.org \n What’s the refund policy? \n50% refund if cancelled by January 27\, 2023. After January 28\, 2023\, no refund will be given. D&HHS reserves the right to cancel at any time with a full refund. *Eventbrite fees will NOT be refunded at any time. * \nWhat if I can’t make it because the roads are bad? \nMany months of planning and coordinating go into this type of event including renting the facility and securing professional presenters. Unfortunately\, that means that we will not cancel (even in the case of extreme winter weather) We understand that travel in Michigan during February can sometimes be hazardous\, and we hope that everyone uses their own discretion with safety in mind. We cannot refund to individuals due to an unforeseen weather event because of the expenses that have already been committed to reserving the facility\, lodging\, food\, entertainment\, and workshop presenters. We ask that you contact the workshop coordinator at workshops@deafhhs.org if you expect to be delayed due to weather. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNo. You can check in when you arrive by giving your name to the person at the registration table. \n Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable? \nNo\, please email workshops@deafhhs.org if you have a specific question. \n \n

SUMMARY:ASL 1 Online class
DESCRIPTION:American Sign Language Class Online with Zoom\n\n\nDeaf and Hard of Hearing Services is now offering American Sign Language (ASL) Classes online! \nSee the “true colors” of American Sign Language during this eight-week course! Did you know that ASL is more than just signs? It is a visual language created by the Deaf that uses signs\, expressions\, and unique linguistic features to communicate. ASL is its own language with its own grammar and sentence structure. It also incorporates important elements of Deaf culture and community! Throughout the eight weeks of ASL 1\, you will learn new signs and how to use them properly to communicate with the Deaf community and others who sign. Each week you will also discuss Deaf culture and how it has shaped ASL as a language. Seats are limited\, so register today! \nSo how does online learning work with ASL? \nClasses meet once a week on Tuesday nights from 6-8 pm for eight weeks using Zoom video conferencing (note that class will not be held the week of Memorial Day and July 4th and will resume the following week).Class meets on May 18\, 25\, June 8\,15\,22\,29 July 13 and 20. \nEach week the instructor will teach new signs and go through practice exercises with the students. Class materials can be accessed on a course platform called Thinkific. Students must have access to internet and a webcam on their computers. Students should use a computer\, not an iPad or tablet. Zoom has limited viewing capabilities on mobile & tablet devices. \nThe class uses a book called “A Basic Course in American Sign Language” by Tom Humphries\, Carol Padden\, Terrence J. O’Rourke and Frank A. Paul (illustrator). ISBN: 9780932666420. This book includes exercises that are used for homework practice. It is used for all D&HHS ASL classes. You can purchase the book online through Amazon or other retailers. \n \nIMPORTANT NOTE: This is a voices-off class\, allowing students to learn through full immersion. We believe that immersion is the best way to learn any new language and culture. An interpreter will be used for the first class to introduce every student to the course comfortably\, but the following classes will be taught voice off with no interpreter. Take on this challenge! This class is a safe space\, and the instructor wants you to be successful. If you need them to slow down or repeat themselves\, just ask! You can use the chat box feature to ask questions and communicate during class. \nThank you for registering for an ASL class with D&HHS! We look forward to seeing you in class! \nDeaf and Hard of Hearing Services is a nonprofit agency in West Michigan with the mission of providing equal communication access\, education\, and advocacy to the Deaf\, DeafBlind\, and Hard of Hearing in pursuit of all life’s opportunities.
