DESCRIPTION:Kids Kamp June 27 – July 1\, 2022\n\n\nJoin Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services for a week of fun\, Monday\, June 27 – Friday\, July 1\, 2022\, from 9 am -12 pm each day!   \nKids Kamp will be held at our future home at the Special Olympics Unified Sports and Inclusion Center\, at 160 68th St SW\, Grand Rapids\, MI 49548. \nKamp is open to all children ages 3-12 (must be potty-trained). \nFun activities all week including cooking\, art\, science\, outdoor activities\, and more! Snacks are included each day. \nEarly Bird ticket until June 17th is $85 for the first child and $70 for each additional child. After June 17th the cost is $95 for the first child and $80 for each additional child. \nScholarships are available! Contact datwood@deafhhs.org for more information. Scholarship registration requires a code before you can sign up! \nRegistration closes June 24th at 5pm. Refunds available until registration closes. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER JUNE 24TH AT 5 PM. At 17\, she works mornings before school to help her parents and brother keep their fishing business afloat. But in joining her high school’s choir club\, Ruby finds herself drawn to both her duet partner and her latent passion for singing. \nWe have scheduled 2 viewing times. \nSunday April 10 at 2 pm \n OR \nTuesday April 12 at 5pm \nCost is a $12 donation per ticket (including eventbrite fees) for both children and adults.  \nTickets must be purchased on Eventbrite prior to the showing. It’s Drive-Thru Signing Santa!  \n \nPack your family in the car and head over to Little Pine Island Camp for a fun filled holiday drive-thru. The path will have various stations including refreshment\, games\, take-aways\, and of course Santa! During the event\, attendees will remain in their cars as they drive the trail from station to station. When you arrive at Santa\, the kids will get to sign with him about what they want this year and even receive a gift! \n \nThis event is FREE to attend. Join Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services for our Tile Art zoom class on June 23rd\, 2021 from 4pm-6pm. \n \nThis event is for Deaf\, DeafBlind\, and Hard of Hearing teens. Participants will receive a Tile Art Kit including all the materials needed for the art project. On June 23rd\, log into zoom to follow along with Darlene as she instructs on different techniques to make your own\, unique tile art! \n \nParticipants must have access to a home computer with a webcam and reliable internet to participate. Some teens may need adult help for the initial setup of the art space. DESCRIPTION:American Sign Language Class Online with Zoom\n\n\nDeaf and Hard of Hearing Services is now offering American Sign Language (ASL) Classes online! \nSee the “true colors” of American Sign Language during this eight-week course! Did you know that ASL is more than just signs? It is a visual language created by the Deaf that uses signs\, expressions\, and unique linguistic features to communicate. ASL is its own language with its own grammar and sentence structure. It also incorporates important elements of Deaf culture and community! Throughout the eight weeks of ASL 1\, you will learn new signs and how to use them properly to communicate with the Deaf community and others who sign. Each week you will also discuss Deaf culture and how it has shaped ASL as a language. Seats are limited\, so register today! \nSo how does online learning work with ASL? \nClasses meet once a week on Tuesday  nights from 6-8 pm for eight weeks using Zoom video conferencing (note that class will not be held the week of Memorial Day and July 4th and will resume the following week).Class meets on May 18\, 25\, June 8\,15\,22\,29 July 13 and 20. \nEach week the instructor will teach new signs and go through practice exercises with the students. Class materials can be accessed on a course platform called Thinkific. Students must have access to internet and a webcam on their computers. Students should use a computer\, not an iPad or tablet. Zoom has limited viewing capabilities on mobile & tablet devices. \nThe class uses a book called “A Basic Course in American Sign Language” by Tom Humphries\, Carol Padden\, Terrence J. O’Rourke and Frank A. Paul (illustrator). ISBN: 9780932666420. This book includes exercises that are used for homework practice. It is used for all D&HHS ASL classes. You can purchase the book online through Amazon or other retailers.  \n  \nIMPORTANT NOTE: This is a voices-off class\, allowing students to learn through full immersion.  We believe that immersion is the best way to learn any new language and culture. An interpreter will be used for the first class to introduce every student to the course comfortably\, but the following classes will be taught voice off with no interpreter. Take on this challenge! This class is a safe space\, and the instructor wants you to be successful. If you need them to slow down or repeat themselves\, just ask! You can use the chat box feature to ask questions and communicate during class. \nThank you for registering for an ASL class with D&HHS! SUMMARY:Mental Mapping the Medical Encounter
DESCRIPTION:An integral skill of the professional interpreter is the ability to correctly anticipate information that parties in an encounter will be discussing. This training will guide participants through typical medical encounters and reveal how prior knowledge of medical subject matter\, medical settings\, and western bio-medical culture can be used to improve an interpreter’s accuracy and contribute to better patient care. There will also be a discussion of best practices in settings with increased risk of exposure to CV19. This training incorporates lecture\, group discussion\, targeted research and interpreting practice.  \n1. Identify at least three roles of a patient’s care team  \n2. Develop two signed “scripts” for routine patient/provider interaction\n3. Describe best practices to uphold NAD/RID CPC tenet 3.0 as it pertains to healthcare \nJames Cech\, BEI 3\, M/MH & DB is currently a staff interpreter at the University of Michigan Health System and performing interpreter with Synergy On Stage. He is a graduate of\, and formerly an instructor at\, Baker College of Flint’s Interpreter Training Program. He maintains a private practice and specializes in medical\, political\, business and entertainment interpreting. He is also interested in physical health and repetitive motion injuries. He has been a certified interpreter since 2010\, and a licensed trainer of The Community Interpreter® International since 2018.\nEarly Bird Price       $70\nPrice increases to    $85 after April 30\, 2020\nWorkshop will be presented in spoken English. DESCRIPTION:Teen Club is an opportunity for Deaf\, DeafBlind\, & Hard of Hearing students/teen to meet new friends and participate in fun activities that build new skills!\n\n\nJoin us in learning what it is like to cook. This class is open to Deaf\, DeafBlind\, and Hard of Hearing teens who want to learn how to cook with friends. Students will learn how to make a homemade meal and enjoy it once they are finished.\n\n\nThis is a 3 hour event taking place on February 29  11 am – 2 pm..\n\n\nRegister for this outing by February 26.  This is a FREE event for Deaf\, Deafblind\, & Hard of Hearing students/teens in middle school or high school only.\n\n\nThere is limited space available so please reserve your space as soon as possible.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuestions?
