The ASL 1 class at our offices is beginning American Sign Language (ASL). It is designed for anyone who wants to begin learning sign language to use in everyday life and to communicate with people who use ASL as their primary language. This class begins the journey to proficiency in ASL, but not intented to be a substitute for professional intensive training to become a sign language interpreter.
The cost is $100 per student until September 15, 2019. After this the cost is $110 per student. The book cost is $55. No refunds will be given after the first day of class. Only the cost of the class and books will be refunded. THE EVENTBRITE FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. For students under 18 please contact datwood@deafhhs.org.
Students are encouraged to contact/visit Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services to further their education through deaf community involvement and use of our library.
The textbook is good for all ASL 1,2,3 and Conversational Classes!
Class sessions are 8 weeks long and meet once per week.
If less than 4 people register for either class, it will be cancelled and refunds given.

American Sign Language Interpreters are professionals who have completed intensive training in their field and are licensed to work according to Michigan Law (PA 204). The Federal Americans with Disabilities Act guarantees a deaf or hard of hearing person the right to effective communicaiton in the workplace and in places of public accomodation; this requirement is not met by the use of an unlicensed signer.
