Tuesday Group Explores the Joys of Horses at Equest Center

This summer, the Tuesday Group from Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services had a special adventure at the Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding, a non-profit dedicated to enhancing lives through equine experiences. Seven members of the group—ranging from Deaf and Hard of Hearing to DeafBlind—joined in a day full of learning, teamwork, and laughter.

Barb DeCan, a Tuesday Group assistant and volunteer, described the outing as “heartwarming” and a chance for the group to step out of their usual environment. “We had a resounding YES when I asked my Tuesday Group friends if they wanted to attend,” Barb said. “Horses are such amazing animals to work with, and it was incredible to see our group bond while learning to care for them, feed treats, and even watch farrier work in action.”

Marie DeRegnaucourt, a Hard of Hearing teacher and longtime Equest staff member, shared her excitement for the group’s visit. “The DHH program at Equest has been a dream of mine since I was 16,” Marie said. “Every activity is tailored to our Deaf and Hard of Hearing participants, with sign language labels throughout the barn, visual timers, and handmade reference books showing over 85 signs used during lessons and events.”

The day was packed with hands-on experiences: the group learned about grooming tools, created horse-themed artwork, gathered beads for bracelets, groomed two horses each—including a descendant of the famous racehorse Secretariat and a giant draft horse—and led a miniature horse to experience the unique sensation of guiding an equine friend. They also enjoyed making and feeding treats to the horses, a favorite activity for many.

For some participants, the day brought unexpected breakthroughs. Deb Atwood, executive director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, shared the story of one man, who arrived unsure about being near horses. “He was afraid of horses and thought horses were afraid of him,” Deb said. “I assured him we would keep him safe. At first he was hesitant during grooming, but after five minutes a huge smile appeared on his face. When I signed and asked if he was happy, he nodded vigorously. Later he asked if he could pet the horse, and someone worked with him on how to do it properly. He was over the moon!”

Another longtime Tuesday Group attendee echoed the joy of the day. “It was a beautiful place. The horses were WOW! We got to brush the horses and learn the correct way to do it and why. I loved being with the horses. I couldn’t wait to get home and tell my family and everyone I met that I got to spend time with horses.”

Barb reflected on the courage and enthusiasm of the group. “I am so proud of my Tuesday Group friends for stepping up to try new adventures. I am amazed by the courage they show every time we tackle something new.”

With smiles all around, meaningful breakthroughs, and many memories made, the Tuesday Group’s visit to Equest was a reminder of the power of animals to inspire joy, confidence, and connection. Both Barb and Marie are looking forward to welcoming more DHHS groups in the future, continuing the partnership that brings the magic of horses to everyone.
