Mental Mapping the Medical Encounter

An integral skill of the professional interpreter is the ability to correctly anticipate information that parties in an encounter will be discussing. This training will guide participants through typical medical encounters and reveal how prior knowledge of medical subject matter, medical settings, and western bio-medical culture can be used to improve an interpreters accuracy and contribute to better patient care. There will also be a discussion of best practices in settings with increased risk of exposure to CV19. This training incorporates lecture, group discussion, targeted research and interpreting practice. 


1. Identify at least three roles of a patients care team 


2. Develop two signed scripts” for routine patient/provider interaction


3. Describe best practices to uphold NAD/RID CPC tenet 3.0 as it pertains to healthcare


James Cech, BEI 3, M/MH & DB is currently a staff interpreter at the University of Michigan Health System and performing interpreter with Synergy On Stage. He is a graduate of, and formerly an instructor at, Baker College of Flint’s Interpreter Training Program. He maintains a private practice and specializes in medical, political, business and entertainment interpreting. He is also interested in physical health and repetitive motion injuries. He has been a certified interpreter since 2010, and a licensed trainer of The Community Interpreter® International since 2018.

Connecticut RID is an approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This Professional Studies (PS) program is offered for 0.625 CEUs at the “Some” instructional level. Lunch is 45 minutes on your own.
